The first impression of a Standard Schnauzer is that of a handsome, robust, square-built, medium size dog with an aristocratic bearing – a dog that always causes heads to turn for an admiring second glance wherever you take him.
The Standard Schnauzer makes a wonderful family companion. Those of us who are fortunate enough to be owned by a Standard Schnauzer know the comfort of their total and unconditional adoration. Widely regarded as “the dog with a human brain”, they excel at competitive events in conformation, obedience, herding, tracking, and agility. Weighing between thirty-five and forty-five pounds, Standard Schnauzers are small enough to be picked up, yet large enough to be an excellent watch dog (with a deep bark).
They have minimal shedding and little if any “doggy odor”. The Standard Schnauzer’s coat needs to be either machine-clipped or hand stripped every 6 – 8 weeks. The very distinctive leg furnishings, beard, and eyebrows are always hand-scissored.
It is of primary importance for you to understand that if you are seeking a quiet or sedate pet, this breed is definitely not for you. Standard Schnauzers are, first and foremost, very high-spirited and athletic and require a lot of daily exercise. Long walks or, better still, free running in an enclosed safe area, will keep your pet relaxed, happy, and a joy to live with. Be prepared for the loving heart your Standard Schnauzer will bring to your entire family as he will constantly try to be involved in everything that you do. Our dogs love to ride in their crates in our SUV even if we are only going on errands. Their intelligence has forced us to spell certain words to avoid overly exciting them. Unfortunately, many times they even figure out what we are spelling! The Standard Schnauzer’s mind develops best through close interaction with his family. He is always very inquisitive, can be stubborn and determined, but when trained properly, will easily meld into your lifestyle and remain absolutely loyal and protective of the family he loves. |
